This is the second iteration of Untitled, Inked Rhythm, curated for the Roppongi Art Night festival, anchored at National Art Center Tokyo. This work embodies elements of Chinese traditional blue-and-green-style landscape painting, and rises as a three-dimensional landscape, infused with hues of blue, green and gold on the surface of three ebony paper sculptures. The installation stands atop a deep dark reflective floor, mirroring the industrial architecture of the museum interior, and the lush green landscape outside. Against the backdrop of the museum’s multi-story high glass walls, the modular repetition featured in both artwork and architecture, evoke Minimalist formal principles. The contradicting qualities embodied in this work, of paper’s frailty and softness vs the impenetrability power of its metallic appearance, merge artistic and poetic traditions with the industrial age.
Running for over a decade, the Roppongi Art Night event aims to encourage an enjoyment of art in everyday life while also pioneering urban development. The event incorporates contemporary art, design, music, video, and performance at various locations to create immersive experiences.
